Bill Gates, the billionaire co-founder of Microsoft, is giving all 2018 college graduates a special gift: his favorite book.
Written by Hans Rosling, Factfulness: Ten Reasons We’re Wrong About the World–And Why Things Are Better Than You Think is noted by Gates as “one of the most important books I’ve ever read— an indispensable guide to thinking clearly about the world.”
Here’s how you can get your copy.
According to the National Center for Education Statistics, as many as 3.6 million college degrees will be awarded this year.
If each graduate were to follow up on Gates’ gift and he was paying the full retail price, the value of his donation would nearly reach $55 million. So, why is this text so special?
Behind The Book
The optimistic book proposes that progress is occurring all around us, it’s just simply overlooked. The author rejects the doom-and-gloom descriptions of the status quo, claiming the world is not always as unfortunate as it seems.
Anyone can download the book for free here if they’re receiving an associate’s, bachelor’s or post-graduate degree in the United States this year. Gates wanted to distribute the book worldwide but couldn’t due to international publishing rights.
Take It To Heart
“When we have a fact-based worldview, we can see that the world is not as bad as it seems — and we can see what we have to do to keep making it better,” is an excerpt from the book that appeared in Gates’ blog post announcing the donation.
“I hope you take Hans’ advice to heart,” Gates said in the blog post. He believes graduates can particularly benefit from learning to think ‘factfully’. Even if you’re not a 2018 graduate, perhaps it would do us all well to retain a little optimism and read this billionaire’s recommendation. “Everyone should read it,” says Gates.
