We’ve compiled a list of the costliest dog breeds on the market. But just because a dog breed CAN be expensive, doesn’t mean it has to be. Animal shelters and rescues are great alternatives.
Think a shelter won’t have a “fancy” dog breed? Think again! The ASPCA says: “Approximately 6.5 million companion animals enter U.S. animal shelters nationwide every year. Of those, approximately 3.3 million are dogs.” Of those 3.3 million dogs, there’s bound to be a rare Irish Wolfhound or Saluki in the mix.
“Prices are determined at the sole discretion of the breeder,” Gina DiNardo, American Kennel Club (AKC) executive secretary, told Finance101. “The AKC does not regulate prices and therefore cannot comment on which breeds are more expensive than others.” DiNardo adds that the AKC Marketplace and getting in touch with breeders can help determine average prices for certain breeds. In our article, we referenced several online sources to determine some of the most typically expensive doggos and their price estimations. Read on to see some of the most highly-priced canines and the shelters where you can take home your forever friend at a fraction of the price.
