Craigslist is known for having anything and everything available for purchase. For many, it is the first place they look for things they need because they know there will be a listing for it. They also know that they will be able to get it for a deal. However, everything that glitters isn’t gold. Just because someone is on Craigslist selling it does not mean it is wise to purchase it. Avoid the headache and don’t buy the following items from a seller on Craigslist.
Some things you just don’t want to buy secondhand. Hats and shoes are two clothing items that are best to purchase brand new from a store. You have to be cautious when purchasing those items from strangers because, depending on the material, they can be difficult to disinfect. With hats, if it’s a baseball cap or skully you’re in the clear because you can throw them into the washing machine and dryer. However, sun hats, cowboy hats, and other hats lacking a soft fabric material don’t have that same flexibility.
When it comes to shoes, there is more than just the issue of being able to disinfect. You also have to be wary of the shoe being worn out to where it’s listed as more than it’s worth. With running shoes and sneakers, they can have a lot of wear and tear even if they were only worn for a few months. The only shoes that might not be risky to buy are dress shoes. Yet, you still should have a thorough look over the shoes to make sure they match the seller’s description.
Real or fake
Of course, every item that is being sold on Craigslist is not authentic. Even when you meet with them to make the transaction you may not have enough time to thoroughly look the item over to verify if it is authentic or not. With some items, it just isn’t worth the risk.
Skin care products and contact lenses are two items that you don’t even want to take the chance that they’re not authentic. With skin care products, there is no way of knowing if the contents are the real deal. Even if it is, you can’t know how old the product is. Some ingredients in skin care products can go bad quickly. The last thing you want to do is put expired products on your skin. Doing so could lead to breakouts or worse.
Contact lenses go on a very sensitive part of your body. It is better to be safe than sorry. If you cannot be 100% that these contact lenses are from an authentic source and were packaged properly then you shouldn’t purchase them. Your sight depends on it.
Other items that would be beyond difficult to verify if they’re real or fake are designer goods, art, and vintage china. Without adequate time and comparison, it can be easy to be fooled by the authenticity of those items. Knockoffs look pretty good nowadays. Unless you frequently purchase the items to know what the real ones look and feel like, you could be fooled.
Furnishing a home can be quite expensive. It is understandable to want to try to save a few bucks by purchasing some second-hand items. However, it may not be worth the money you would save. Purchasing appliances from Craigslist is very common. There are usually dozens of appliances for sale daily. The issue with purchasing an appliance from a seller on Craigslist is that you usually can’t test to make sure that it functions properly. You have to just hope that the seller is being honest about the condition of it.
Another item that you absolutely want to avoid purchasing from Craigslist is a mattress. Purchasing a mattress from a stranger is pretty gross. People do all sorts of things on their mattress from eating to other funny business. It isn’t really the most ideal place to want to lay your body on. In addition, you don’t want to take the chance of the mattress having bed bugs or dust mites.
I know desperate times call for desperate measures, but you still have to be smart. You may save a little money at the moment buying from Craigslist. However, if the purchase you make is fake, dirty, or worn out it will be a short-lived purchase and ultimately a waste of money.
