While there are definitely a lot of pros, there are always cons that come with everything. Here’s a quick overview of both the good and the bad that comes with an all-inclusive vacation.

Food

One of the biggest pros of an all-inclusive is, of course, the food. Not only do you get unlimited all you can eat buffets, but you also get snacks, drinks, and higher-end restaurants usually available with reservations. Most all-inclusive resorts also include free room service if you don’t feel like venturing out to one of the restaurants or buffets. When you’re lounging by the pool, you can often enjoy a poolside bar and snack shack. There are always a lot of choices when it comes to food at an all-inclusive as well. You can choose from a variety of cuisines, types of foods and restaurants. For families, this is particularly great. When your kid suddenly decides they hate strawberries, you have another option right there in the buffet line.

One big downside to the food at an all inclusive is the quality. You should go in knowing that while it’s usually very good, it’s not going to be the best you’ve ever had. One tip is to always try the local cuisine. This is usually the best since it’s what the region is known for. It can also be hard to get to local restaurants outside of the resort if you want to try them. There are usually a lot of resorts close together so it may be a bit of a hike to get to a local town.

Activities

One major perk to an all-inclusive is the number of activities available to try. Many activities such as water sports, games, yoga and golf are included in your stay. You’ll have access to countless hours of activities and things to do should you wish. For kids, there are always a lot of special activities as well. You may even be able to have older children stay at an activity center while you take part in another adult activity or enjoy some rest and relaxation. Many resorts also have live music and performances throughout the day and night.

A downside to the activities available is that some aren’t always included. There will always be some activities or excursions that cost additional money. You may also feel some pressure from guides to purchase these packages which can be a nuisance if you aren’t interested. Spas are also usually available at an extra cost.

Locations

The location of the resort is something that is always important. Once you’ve chosen your desired locale, you’ll usually find a number of all-inclusive options. These resorts are almost always located on the beach with ocean access and a number of pools. Many of the popular locations are also in areas where the weather is perfect almost year round.

Something to keep in mind is that these types of resorts don’t make it easy for you to leave. If you want to explore a town, you’ll need to plan for some transportation ahead of time or speak with someone local at the resort. Once you have a town or some restaurants you want to check out, the resort may be able to get you a shuttle and a guide. Keep in mind, if you don’t set this up on your own, you’re usually not leaving the resort during your stay. In some cases, you can even book a hotel within the town on the front or back end of your trip if you wish to do some additional exploring.
