5 tips to get a (relatively) cheap flight this holiday season
People love to travel during the holiday season. They go to visit family or take vacations in warmer climates. All this travel makes flights considerably more expensive than they are in other parts of the year. Finding a flight that gets you where you want to be while not breaking into your Christmas present budget can be difficult, but here is some helpful advice.
Don’t fly on December 21st
December 21st is usually the absolute most expensive day to fly in the entire year. Too many people want to travel home for Christmas on that particular day. If you can, get a flight before or after. Even just one day of difference can end up getting you a much cheaper fare.
When looking for a flight around the holidays, don’t just go with the airline you always travel with. Checking out different places, perhaps smaller regional airports, can save you a lot of money over flying with major airlines out of busy places. You may need to drive a little out of your way, but the savings can be well worth it.
Don’t forget your rewards points
If you have a credit card or other type of payment that gets you flight points or other rewards points that can be used to travel, the holidays are the perfect time to use them. You will get more value for your points by using them during the holidays than at any other time of the year.
Take a gamble on cheaper, later flights
If you absolutely cannot find a cheap enough flight early on in the holiday season, you may benefit from waiting for fares to drop. After December 21st, prices on flights drop again and may become cheaper than they were in previous weeks. This does risk making you late, or having to pay for a more expensive flight if fares don’t drop enough though!
Book early whenever possible
Perhaps the absolute best way to get a cheap holiday flight is to book it early, the earlier the better! This does mean that you need to have your holiday plans set earlier than most people do though, so it can be tricky. Booking early will almost always guarantee a significantly cheaper flight than anything else will.
